You treat the pairs of strings as though they are a single string - ie you play right across both strings on both down and upstrokes.

So, as you can imagine from the DVD I am working on, I am just starting out exploring the mandolin ... One question that has never been entirely clear to me is whether I should strike both strings of a given pair on the upstroke and the downstroke. I noticed in his introduction to right-hand technique, Mike Marshall seems to strike the upper of the two strings on the downstroke and the lower of the two strings on the upstroke. Is this standard or did I not see this correctly? Should I strike both all the time or only one each direction? Any guidance from an experienced player would be deeply appreciated.
