I have just used the instant access, It was very easy to use and also downloaded to my laptop. I would much rather have the dvd so I don't have to carry my laptop everywhere. i like to use my big screen tv, and altough you can conect the laptop to it my dvd player is all ready to go,so I don" think I will be using instant access in the future. but thats just me

Yes, the tab will also be available as a .pdf file along with the video.

For now these will be complete DVDs. We may make them available in other formats later on - say, by the song - but right now it will be an alternative to the hard copy. Savings, no shipping, instant gratification! What more could you want?

This will be a new bonus for me like the mini-lessons and quick licks. If this can be on an ala cart system I'm realy on board. There are several tunes that I would love to have the lesson on, but I don't realy want the rest of the DVD that they are on. Not that there is anything wrong with the whole DVDs, it just personal taste.

I can't wait to see what Homespun will make available via downloads..

We've found the perfect solution to this!

Watch for an announcement about our new download service in the next couple of weeks. We'll start out with a small number of DVD lessons (about 20) but we hope to add to it to eventually include most of our catalog. This will be a safe, fast and secure - and less expensive - way to get Homespun DVDs, delivered to your desktop almost immediately.

Stay tuned.... We'll be letting you know about this soon.

A download option could be nice, but I would not be interested in a paid-for-streaming-video-lesson. I want to have the lessons available also when I'm not on-line.

About copy-protection on downloaded lessons: I don't think it would work. Most of these copy-protection mechanisms have been broken, so they are no restriction to the "bad guys", and they are often an annoyance to the "good guys".

And I don't believe the Homespun DVD's are encrypted, or are they? And I don't see them all over the Internet (although I haven't really been looking). Maybe Homespun clients are just honest people! (yes, that's naive, I know).

All in all, I think I would just continue buying the DVD's. Maybe buy/download one song from a DVD to check if it is right for me. But I wouldn't expect any discount when I buy the full DVD after that.

Hey Happy and all. As far as downloading from Homespun being a good thing; yes for me it would be. There are times I want an immediate download of something and I would trust Homespun. Many times I find some music I am interested in online after I google search and it may be inexpensive but I have trouble giving them my credit card for just a few dollars since I don't know them.

As far as the intricacies of how to set it up that's all yours. Whatever safeguards you have to put in place is yours to figure out. As you well know it will be abused if you leave all the gates down. The cows will get out. I'm not going to be mass producing anything and however you can get it from you to me would be fine.

Homespun has a good name and personally I would love to know I could grab something quickly from you folks. Ron Morgan

I wouldn't like the streaming video idea as I would want to have my own permanent copy of the material to play either on PC or DVD.

Now we have fast broadband I would prefer to simply download the present DVD's with a pdf file of the books. It would save on postage and I would probably buy more. It is a bit annoying when postage is free in USA but seven (!) dollars to Europe - with sometimes customs charges on top.

I would prefer not to have usage restrictions, as while I can understand the commercial concerns about possible copying, I doubt if it would significantly impact on sales of this kind of material. After all it is not that difficult to copy a DVD or photocopy a book anyway.

As an overseas user of Homespun material I would welcome downloads. I already use downloads from the Lick Library site and am able to burn them to DVD. I have never tried burning off more than one copy so I don't know if they are protected. Lick Library don't do tab which is a drag so I would hope that pdf files of the instrument parts would be availableonlinee from Homespun.

Normally on most DVDs I only actually work on half the pieces so would cherry pick my way through my preferred tunes. I don't know if that has an effect on the economics of this method of preparation and delivery.

If there was a DVD of one of my 'stars' then I am still just as likely to buy it as there is something reassuring about having the actual physical product in your hands.

Wow, internet download would be great but I can see from a business/copyright standpoint, this can be very hard to layout. Have you thought about putting your DVD's on i-tunes for video download? I'm not sure how much apple would profit away from you but it does seem very stress free because people would be able to download once.

Yes, this is an ecellent idea and already done by www.guitartricks.com ,why did I mention this, is only to help You in your plannings ,I´m your true customer and will remain that way.

I made a request on the mentioned site above, accomplishing a similar site for the intermediate and advanced Country Style fiddle, they acclaimed that theres no qualified teachers available and interested, I think You Homespun people have the tools for this.

I would prefer being able to purchase lessons in the format that Homespun is now using, except transferred electronically rather than via a physical disc. I am willing to pay the same price as Homespun now charges if I can make one copy to DVD. I'll trade my cost for the disc for not being charged S&H. For streaming or downloadable-only-to-hard-drive, I would expect a discount of at least $5 to make me choose downloading over getting the DVD by mail.

I'm not interested in partial lessons or segments of DVDs. There is so much of that available for free; and I don't get much out most of it. And I don't have much interest in lessons that are "How to play Specific Tune X." I prefer learning tunes that are in a sequence of skill development.

In case you didn't know about it, we had a program for a while, when we were converting the VHS videos to DVDs, where we would give a 40% discount to anyone who purchased the tapes from Homespun and wanted to replace them with the same title on DVD. Many people took us up on this offer and were pleased about it. There's no doubt that DVDs work much better for the learning process, with its navigation menus and instant track access.

We're actually gearing up to start such a service - lessons on demand that you can download or access from our site. The problem we've been having is the practical application of this idea and how it would work best for both Homespun and our customers. Here are some of our considerations:

• Would we offer lesson segments or songs that you could download to your hard drive? In this case, unless we coded them with copy protection software you would (theoretically) be able to disseminate these lessons all over the web and we would lose control of them. There are applications that put whatever restrictions we think we need on the files - e.g. you can download it once and make one copy only; downloaded programs can only be played on the computer it was downloaded to; it can be transferred to a DVD one time but not again; etc. A whole menu of restrictions that we'd have to agree on.

• Alternately, we can do streaming video only. Then you'd get a password and can watch the lessons on your computer, but you can't transfer them to disks or other portable media. Many lessons are currently done this way because it's easier to set up.

• Then we'd have to figure out a payment plan: Pay for each lesson you want to access as you go? Pay a subscription that would give you a certain number of viewings - or maybe as many as you want - for as long as your subscription is paid up? And on and on... You can see why it's taking us a while to get this started.

We'd be glad to hear any feedback you may have, such as: Is this something, in principle, that Homespun customers would go for? Which of the scenarios above would appeal to you - or can you think of a better one? How much would you be willing to pay for, say, a 10-minute lesson on a given song or topic.

Here's another concern: Let's say you purchased a Doc Watson lesson as a download in which he teaches and plays "Deep River Blues." Assuming you liked it, would you still be willing to purchase the full DVD even though you now have one of the songs? How about if we deducted the cost of the download from the price of the DVD?

These are all things we're dealing with and would love to get some feedback about it. Thanks in advance for your thoughts, comments and suggestions.

Agree, there are a number of songs that I'd like to learn, but maybe not enough on a certain set that I would buy the whole set. Hopefully it would come with the notation too.

I'm so old fashioned. I still use old cassette lessons and old video tape lessons from way back. This newer technology is great, but I still enjoy finally getting to old lessons that I bought years ago before DVD's and CD's were mainstream, and there was no real internet like there is today. Some of these lessons are real gems that have not been converted to newer technologies and have disappeared. Well, not totally on topic, but I just thought I'd chime in.

I am all for downloading lessons..

Please make sure that after the download, I can play them on a DVD player.

During the summer nights, I like to use a small portable DVD player in my screen porch and would hate to be forced to use a laptop only.
