Howdy!
I'm writing to inquire about whether Homespun currently has any tapes that address bluegrass improvisation for guitar. I have several Homespun tapes including David Grier's "Building Powerful Solos", Russ Barenberg's "Advanced Flatpick Guitar" and the six tape Tony Rice set (along with the "Intimate Lesson" video.
These were all excellent tapes and I learned much from them, but they do not really address improvisation. It seems that the "solos" are pretty much the melodies of the songs. When I hear the word "solo", I think more like a jazz musician, that is, improvisation over the chord changes.
I'm at the point now (and believe many others would be too) where I'd like to learn more about how these great players improvise. What scales do they use over a given set of chord changes. What is the theory behind these scales? What are some of the licks and riffs within these scales that players like myself could learn.
Do you currently have anything that discusses this on an advanced level? I've searched all over and haven't found much out there, at least nothing of the consistently high quality that Homespun offers. Seems like the market is wide open.
Please let me know if you have any existing products of this nature for guitar (and dobro) and if not, might I suggest you work to fill this void in the (very near) future.
Keep up the great work!
Joel

Pat Flynn's video addresses this subject really well. Check this one out.
