short history catch up

Idiots guide to fiddle playing and my uncle tuning my violine helped me to get back into fiddle playing.  so I been using that fiddle book music, and steve kaufman "collection of american fiddle tunes for flatpicking guitar". I was proud of myself yesterday for i picked up an ez book that hand the melody of phantom of the opera on it so i bowed it out and i said "YESS" but now i crave more as I study more,

from homespun i ordered the kenny kosek package,  that was before the become a better fidller by kenny came out. However in the move I did last year , the six cd book was lost somehow, though i have my others.

so recently i pulled out the old vsh and fired it up watching the learning bluegrass fiddle in it, and learned the jack of diamonds, boild them cabbage down, the waterbound and the nashville shuffle.  I am before the liberty part.

(on a side note the book tab I been using has some songs capo so while i am learning bill cheatam in the key of g,, is that ok or will it be detrimental?).

so I was impressed by the new beginner fiddle dvd by jim wood descriptions and so i wondered.

1. is there any basics covered in the absolute beginner fiddle that isn't covered in the bluegrass fiddle by kenny?

2. would I be wasting money ordering the dvd by jim wood? (beside listening to the music ) when i have the vsh tape by kenny.

(i fear my vsh might go on the fringe and I will have to order dvds agian eheh ).

3. how about the other beginner tapes,,

Bluegrass Fiddle Boot Camp

Mark O'Connor's Fiddle Camp - Back to Basics

3 a, how would they compare to the abosolute beginners to fiddle, and bluegrass fiddle volume one? in other words am i missing out on my fiddle development If i don't order those ?

----

4.the first chapter in the idiots guide to fiddle is scottish, then irish, then old time, then bluegrass.

so does

A Fiddle Lesson With Natalie MacMaster

or

Learn to Play Irish Fiddle - Two-DVD Set

cover scottish style (even though i know the latter says irish right there).

4.1 do I need to learn scottish style or just move to irish style?

5. does the irish fiddle dvd use standard tuning or alternative tunings,,

I don't want to at this time in my life learn to play in differnt tunings

i notice the old time, cajun, and southern fiddle dvd advertise alternative tunings.

6. and finally does any fiddle dvds teach how to play in second, third postions,, i know kenny showed second and third position but didn't play any tunes in that style at least on the first vsh movie, all i remember in the second vsh is the teaching of double stops.

Hi Donald,

Jim Wood's DVDs are really meant for the absolute beginner, but there is a huge amount of valuable information on them even for an early-intermediate player. Things like proper posture, warm-up exercises, and lots of great tunes played at a very slow and easy pace. Kenny Kosek's videos have been favorites for many years, but I think Jim's lessons are perhaps better for getting off to a good solid start - especially if you're just starting out. I think they're great. Just my 2 cents, anyway.

Musically yours,

Happy

HI, Just updating this to say I took advantage of the sale and ordered it the jim wood package today.

I was going to wait til the march sale but I came into a little money enough to order it for the discount.  with the 12 bucks for shipping to canada, it is like i just paid extra 2 bucks to ship it to canada.

hopefully I can post a detailed review around november after i try each dvd for a bit.
