Dirk Powell
Dirk Powell is one of the most important young traditional musicians in the United States today. He is best known for his accordion work with Balfa Toujours, a group which is carrying on the Cajun traditions of Dirk's legendary father-in-law, Dewey Balfa. Dirk won first place at the annual Mulate's Accordion Contest in 1994 and has taught Cajun accordion across the U.S. and throughout Europe.
He has been playing professionally since his teens and has recorded on more than twenty albums. Balfa Toujours' latest Rounder recording, "La Pointe," has been called "an unselfconscious explosion of creative energy" by Barry Ancelet, the premier authority on Cajun culture in Louisiana.
