Todd Phillips
Since the mid-1970s, Todd Phillips has been the bassist of choice for many of the most creative and innovative bands in acoustic instrumental music. A two-time Grammy Award winner, Phillips was a founding member of the original David Grisman Quintet, the Tony Rice Unit and the Bluegrass Album Band with Rice, J.D. Crowe, Doyle Lawson, Vassar Clements, Jerry Douglas and Bobby Hicks. He has worked with a virtual who’s who of the best in the acoustic music world, including Sam Bush, John Hartford, Alison Brown, Bryan Sutton, Tim O’Brien, Stuart Duncan, Elvis Costello, Rosanne Cash, Joan Baez and many more. Phillips has produced solo recording projects - “Timeframe” and “In The Pines” - as well as recordings as a member of Psychograss and Phillips-Grier-Flinner. His tone, timing, and subtly intricate bass lines make him one of the few real stylists on acoustic bass, and he is among the very best practitioners of the instrument on the scene.
