The songs, guitar techniques and deep knowledge that each of these musicians impart will open new doors in your playing, musicianship and overall knowledge of our musical traditions.
Steve James is known for his mastery of old-time blues guitar styles, as well as his deep knowledge of the history of the great traditional players, from Piedmont to Delta. On this lesson, he takes five pieces representative of different styles and teaches them in careful detail for the learning student. Using guitars from his extensive collection (a 1936 National Trojan, a Collings C-10 and a National "O" style resophonic), he covers some of his favorite arrangements in different keys and tunings, highlighting techniques, chord theory, licks and other musical insights that will be useful in figuring out any other blues-based songs you'll want to learn. Songs: Sugar Babe, Wet Laundry Blues, Buddy Bolden's Blues, Stack Lee's Blues (Stagolee) and Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight.

Hans Theessink, a masterful player, singer and performer, teaches the the haunting, soulful sounds of the Mississippi Delta that he learned first-hand from traditional players in the American South. Blues fans and players worldwide have embraced. Hans' passion for the blues is clear as he details the tunings, chord shapes, bass runs, fingerpicking style, slide technique and percussive strokes that form the core of every good blues player's repertoire. He plays, sings and analyzes seven favorite classics and originals: Prison Blues, Big Bill's Guitar, Vicksburg Is My Home, Sugar Babe, You Make Me Feel So Good, Sitting On Top Of The World, Two Trains.

Legendary singer and guitarist Geoff Muldaur has chosen six gospel and blues arrangements that are filled with ideas, techniques and wonderful songs to add to your repertoire. They include two traditional gospel songs: Just a Little While to Stay Here, based on a New Orleans funeral march in dropped D tuning; the soulful Trouble Soon Be Over in open G; I Believe I'll Go Back Home, Geoff's own version of the biblical story of the Prodigal Son; Blind Willie Johnson's Tears Come Rolling Down; and one of Geoff's show-stoppers, the otherworldly Wild Ox Moan.
