Family Style Music
Jimmie Dale Gilmore is an American music icon. His expressive tenor voice, with its distinctive Texas twang and deep folk and country influences, has captivated audiences for decades. Colin Gilmore’s style has clearly been shaped by his father’s music, but he builds on the traditions he was surrounded with growing up in the Austin, Texas, music scene. The two playing together, using both fingerpicking and flatpick styles, create a sound that only families singing and playing together can generate.
In this Homespun download-only lesson, the father-and-son duo play some of their favorite songs and show the simple but elegant guitar arrangements that underlie their unique brand of Americana music. Hosted by Adam Traum, they discuss their influences and approaches to songwriting and provide insights into their music for aspiring pickers and singer/songwriters.
The Gilmores play arrangements of two of Jimmie Dale’s best-loved songs: Another Colorado and Blue Shadows (co-written with Hal Ketchum), as well as Reunion by Jo Carol Pierce. Butch Hancock, Jimmie Dale’s good friend and mentor, wrote Just a Wave Not The Water and My Mind’s Got a Mind of Its Own. They also play and demo Colin Gilmore’s up-tempo rocker, The Way We Are, which was recorded by the Flatlanders, the pioneering alt-country group made up of Joe Ely, Butch Hancock and Jimmie Dale Gilmore.
This lesson is perfect for intermediate guitarists and aspiring songwriters looking for great new material, along with simple embellishments that will spruce up your own songs. If you are a fan of the Gilmores' work and want to learn some of their great songs and hear their stories, it will be time well spent.
